Moraine Lake
Away from Lake Louise, at the end of a beautiful 13
kilometer-long oblique mountain road, is Moraine Lake in the Valley
of the Ten Peaks. This is another attractive location with similar
turquoise water surrounded by snow-capped peaks; however it is a lot fewer
visited.
Moraine Lake is overshadowed by ten peaks, all more than
3,000 meters high, containing the Wenkchemna Glacier. There is a grand view
across the lake from an overlook reached by climbing up a short path known as
the Rock pile
Trail, situated close to the parking lot. In the spring, the rumble of
falling glaciers or landslides can be heard in the distance.
From Moraine Lake, there is a
day walk to Larch
Valley and Sentinel Pass, one of the highest mountain
passes in the public park. It is a fairly grueling day hike, but the remuneration
is the astonishing view. This hike is frequently snow covered in the higher
region. The area is mainly gorgeous in autumn when the larches are altering
color.
